Jenna & Max’s wedding at The Lodge at Torrey Pines took place along the beautiful La Jolla coast. They wanted an outdoor celebration that felt close to nature, with lots of flowers, personal touches, and a long dinner outside overlooking the golf course.
The Lodge at Torrey Pines was such a beautiful fit for the day they imagined. Its Craftsman architecture, lush grounds, and views of the golf course created a backdrop that already felt warm and rooted in the landscape, so the rest of the design could complement the setting.
What stood out most to me about Jenna & Max’s wedding was how personal it was. The details looked beautiful, but each one meant something. Many parts of the day reflected their life together, their Chicago background, and the friends and family who traveled to celebrate with them.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines sits in La Jolla beside the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course, with a collection of indoor and outdoor wedding spaces that can work for anything from a small dinner to a much larger celebration. The venue’s Arroyo Terrace can accommodate up to 220 guests and overlooks the 18th green, while other spaces like the Signature Courtyard offer a more intimate setting surrounded by native California landscaping.
The outdoor setting was really important to Jenna and Max. Their ceremony and reception took place among green lawns, tall trees, and next to the open golf course. The Craftsman-style lodge gave the day a warm, classic feel.

Even though Jenna & Max got married in Southern California, they included many small touches that reminded them of home. Their invitations had special drawings and details from their story, even featuring their dog. For their guest book, they used a thrifted Monet book inspired by the Art Institute of Chicago. Nearly all of their guests had traveled to California for the celebration, so Jenna & Max also left handwritten notes at each place setting thanking everyone for coming.
I love these kinds of details because they make a big wedding feel more personal.

Their ceremony took place outside with the golf course stretching into the distance behind them.
The setting was already incredible, and the design complemented the landscape. Guests sat in wooden chairs on the lawn, and loose, garden-style flowers framed the ceremony space without blocking the view.
Looking from above, you could see how well everything fit into the property. And because everyone was already gathered outdoors, the transition into cocktail hour felt incredibly natural. Guests could mingle across the lawn, enjoy the California sunshine, and take in the views while the reception space was set up nearby.

The reception design was one of my favorite parts of the entire day. Long tables ran across the lawn under string lights, with the lodge and golf course as the backdrop. The tables looked natural and a bit wild, with flowers spilling over the edges and growing up naturally from the grass. Instead of using the same large centerpiece on every table, the flowers were arranged in layers and had lots of texture. Soft whites, lavender, green, blush, and deep burgundy colors ran through the arrangements, making them feel garden-inspired but not too romantic or traditional.
Even the DJ booth was decorated with flowers, so it felt like an intentional part of the reception, as well. This is such a great example of how thoughtful design can make an outdoor reception feel cohesive from every angle.
As the sun started to set over the golf course, everyone gathered at the long tables for dinner. The late afternoon light moved across the lawn, candles started to glow, and the reception changed from bright and open to something softer and more intimate. There were speeches, laughter, glasses raised across the tables, and those sweet moments between guests that I always love to photograph.

This wedding was also such a dream to photograph on film. The colors and textures at The Lodge at Torrey Pines work beautifully with film. The deep greens of the Craftsman buildings, the warm wood, the golf course, the flowers, and the California light all came through in a soft, nostalgic way.
The reception photos turned colorful, a bit blurred, a little chaotic, and full of movement. These images feel very different from the more timeless portraits earlier in the day, but that contrast helps tell the whole story.
Your wedding photos do not have to look the same from start to finish. Your day can feel soft and classic, while the dance floor can be wild and energetic.
